TAMPA, Fla. -- Attorney General Bill McCollum says that he now supports Arizona's tough new immigration law, although he doesn't think Florida needs such a severe crackdown on illegal immigrants.
During stops in Tampa Friday, McCollum said Florida doesn't need such a law because it doesn't have a border problem like Arizona, where a sweeping new law has drawn protests.
McCollum, a Republican candidate for governor, had previously said he opposed the law because it allowed police to stop people suspected of being illegal. He said Friday that he threw his support behind it after amendments were added outlawing ethnic and racial profiling by the police.
