About the series: SB 1070 isn’t just some clash of ideologies. Real people’s lives are at stake. During the march, writer Aarti Shahani went in search of regular folks who live and work in Phoenix. “On my first trip here, I interviewed Sheriff Arpaio and Russell Pearce,” she says, “today I wanted to meet the people they are targeting.” By the end of the day, Shahani realized just how many kids know about police, jails and deportation firsthand. “They’ve lost their innocence,” explains Dr. Sylvia Herrera, a main organizer of the march.
